Fiat takes the top off the 500

Fiat takes the top off the 500!

In 1957 The original Fiat 500 was met with glowing reviews by the European automotive press and it looks as if the  new version of Fiat's chic bambino remains true to the original convertible, as it features a ‘sardine tin’ roof - fixed side rails with a sliding soft-top continuing the traditional set by the original 500 though the roof is now electrically operated, and slides back into a neat ruffle of fabric atop the rear glass window, and, with a new spoiler incorporated into the retractable roof, it keeps the third brake light visible whether the top is up or down
.

The canvas fabric for the soft top will come in Ivory, Red or Black and it will be matched with several bodywork colour schemes, two of which have been created specifically for the new car, a brilliant Pearl Red and a unique Warm Grey.

Aside from the new soft top, the 500C is exactly the same size as the basic model and will launch with the option of the same three engines as the hard-top: The 1.3-litre 75 horsepower Multi-Jet Turbo diesel with five-speed manual, and the 1.2-litre 69 horsepower and 1.4-litre 100 horsepower petrol engines, available with either manual or automated-manual Dualogic transmission. It even features the same Start and Stop system. This means that at every stop when shifting to neutral and releasing the clutch, the engine is switched off and then restarted simply by selecting a gear.

The 500C shows undisputed proof of Fiat's leadership in this vehicle class where continuous modernism ensures that its position as the industry's standard is maintained since its standard features include environmental friendliness and intractable reliability.

Australian market prices and specifications for the Fiat 500C will be announced when local sales start in mid-2010.
